Border security, schools big items in Texas House budget

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Putting body cameras on troopers patrolling the Texas-Mexico border and cutting funding for environmental regulators are among the proposals lawmakers may try tacking onto a vote of a new $210 billion state budget.

The Texas House is expected Tuesday to approve drastically increasing border security spending and putting an extra $800 million into public schools. Democrats say that still won't fully restore massive spending cuts to Texas classrooms in 2011.

The budget vote usually drags on late as lawmakers offer amendments that serve to make political points but have no real chance of passing.

Abolishing the Texas Lottery and Democratic efforts to defund an "Alternatives to Abortion" program are among hundreds of amendments already filed.

About two months remain in Gov. Greg Abbott's first legislative session.
