Texas anti-gay marriage bill dead for now as deadline passes

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A bill widely backed by Texas Republicans in an attempt to stop gay marriage regardless of how the U.S. Supreme Court rules this summer is dead for now.

Time ran out at midnight Thursday for the Texas House to pass legislation that would prohibit government employees from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. It never reached a vote due to outnumbered Democrats' stall tactics.

Nearly every House Republican sponsored the bill. But powerful Texas business groups opposed it. Some pointed to backlash over recent Indiana and Arkansas laws that opponents consider discriminatory.

Republicans saw the bill as a way to put Texas at the forefront of resistance if justices uphold same-sex marriage.

Although the idea could be revived before the session ends, Republicans haven't yet suggested they will try.
