Former detective suing Central Texas sheriff's office

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A former Central Texas detective who says she was fired after she submitted a gender bias complaint is suing the county and its sheriff's office.

Ex-Travis County Sheriff's Office employee Carri Turner is seeking her old job, lost wages, punitive damages and legal fees.

Her attorney, Philip Durst, says Turner submitted a discrimination complaint last year, after seeing a lack of respect toward female officers and a preference for men for leadership roles. Turner had kidney surgery around the time she filed the complaint.

Durst says the sheriff's office cited performance issues for Turner's termination, but later said she was taking too much leave. Durst says they believe the sheriff's office was looking for a reason to fire her.

A sheriff's office spokesman declined to comment because of pending litigation.
