Ways to give back that won't cost you a dime

What one man did with a $10,000.

- The holidays are upon us and we’re in a generous mood-- but what can we do if our bank accounts are running low on funds? Fortunately, all you need is a time and a little inspiration.

1.Give Blood

You don’t need to wait for a natural disaster (or for the holidays, for that matter), because the Red Cross welcomes donations year round. A single pint of blood can actually help save three lives. Even if you can’t give blood, you can still volunteer your time.

2. Organize a Yard Sale

You might be light on cash now, but organizing a yard sale in your community to raise funds for the charity you’d like to support means you’ll still get to donate cold, hard cash. You’ll also be raising the spirits of your community as you work together to do good.

3. Put Pen to Paper

You may not be able to sign a check, but you can write a letter to a soldier. Operation Gratitude sends care packages and your handwritten notes to deployed troops, new recruits, and veterans. A paragraph or two with a thank you goes a long, long way.

4. Help Build a House

Habitat for Humanity needs volunteers to help build homes for low-income families all around the U.S. and the world. If you aren’t handy with a hammer, don’t worry because instruction is provided and ALL skill levels are welcome.

5. Clean Out Your Closet

Those pantsuits and blouses collecting dust could be put to use by Dress for Success, which provides professional attire to empower women in your community.

And if you DO have money burning a hole in your pocket, watch the video above to be inspired by the very unusual way one man gave back to his community.
