8-year-old girl's love for bugs gets her published in a scientific journal

Sophia Spencer loves bugs, and recently the insect world let her know she’s not weird at all for liking them.

Because of her passion, 8-year-old Sophia was teased at school by her peers. As reported by NPR, her mother, Nicole, wanted to encourage her, but wasn’t sure how. So, she reached out to the Entomological Society of Canada for experts to let her know she wasn’t strange for loving insects and wanting it to be a profession.

The organization tweeted out a call for help with the hashtag #BugsR4Girls.

Entomologists from all over the world responded with words of encouragement to let Sophia know she wasn’t weird at all.  Even entomology Ph.D candidate Morgan Jackson recruited Sophia to write a paper about how Twitter can help promote women in science.

In the paper, Sophia wrote: “It felt good to have so many people support me, and it was cool to see other girls and grown-ups studying bugs. It made me feel like I could do it too, and I definitely, definitely, definitely want to study bugs when I grow up, probably grasshoppers."

Now, no one bugs her except the insects.

Sophia told NPR, "Kids now, after I told them the whole story, they're like, 'Oh, well — could you teach me more about bugs?' And I'm like, 'Sure.'”
