Austin Mayor Steve Adler is challenging commuters and businesses to skip out on rush hour on May 11th. It's an effort to recreate what the roads looked like the day President Obama came to town for South by Southwest. Travel times were dramatically cut back on Mopac and I-35.
Adler believes if even a fraction of the drivers take part in Don't Rush it will help out.
He sees mobility as a major problem for the city. Changing habits may be a quicker, less costly piece of the overall problem. It will take billions of dollars and a lot of time to build what the city really needs. Although, Adler says the city is looking into the possibility of a bond election in November.
CapMetro is offering free rides on the 11th as an incentive to people who may not have used the services.
