A lot of guys will say yoga isn’t their thing but how many have actually tried it? A local studio is taking a different approach by pairing yoga with football.
Mark Herron is the co-owner of Sukha Yoga in South Austin. He wanted men to feel welcome so combining yoga with Monday Night Football seemed like the perfect incentive.
Good Day anchor Dave Froehlich and Good Day producer Chad headed out to the studio to give it a try.
The yoga studio can be a foreign place to many men, even more so to Dave and Chad.
Neither has done yoga before and after a few poses they were feeling the heat but they soldiered on. Move after move and remembering to monitor their breathing.
Much like other guys out there Dave and Chad has some reservations about yoga.
Herron is a former college football and baseball player and says there are just not enough guys practicing yoga because he believes that many men think yoga is for women.
Herron feels it can be intimidating because many men may not be that flexible but Herron says that’s exactly why men should do yoga.
“You'll open up places in your body that have been tied up or blocked, literally muscles and joints, ligaments,” Herron says.
The series starts September 14 and will be held over eight weeks. Men will head out to the studio to work on a different body part or limb every week.
“You get to come soften and do some yoga, and then drink some beer, eat some wings and watch some Monday Night Football,” Herron says.
Herron says the classes are only for men because he hopes those that attend won’t feel discouraged if they’re not as flexible. He’s hoping this can lead to building a community.
“I would like the guys who come to have an experience. To share how they feel and what's going on in their lives and not necessarily feel like you have to have walls up all the time or be tough,” Herron says.
The yoga did have an effect on Dave and Chad. After the class wrapped up, the two say they have a different perspective.
“I thought it was cool. He talks about stretching being a by product but it was kind of the main purpose of me wanting to check it out,” Dave says.
Chad says, “You get through the class and you realize its more breathing and there's purpose more than just stretching.”
