Mattel's Hot Wheels are in elementary classroom across Round Rock ISD for a reason. The toy maker has teamed up with the University of Southern California to create Speedometry. It's a curriculum designed to promote STEM education. It's making math and science fun.

"We need to see how long it will go with the gravity of the ramp," said Daniel Perdomo, a 5th grader at Bluebonnet Elementary School. He's on his second lesson of Speedometry and if you ask him it doesn't feel like a typical lesson.

"Their faces light up. They have gotten to play with the cars outside of school and it's neat to build on something they are already familiar with," said teacher Kate Wood. Wood sees her students more engaged. Speedometry uses cars and tracks to teach math and science.

"I think it's important especially in science to get them the hands on experience. The kits let us have a real life connection to concepts that might otherwise be hard for them to understand," added Wood.

The Mattel Children's Foundation donated 241 kits to 37 campuses across Round Rock ISD. The gift means 27,000 students will have access to cars and tracks in class.
