For many kids, monsters can be a source of fear or lack of sleep but one local group hopes the creatures can help empower children to explore their imagination.
It's called The Monster Project. The group asks children to draw monsters which are then turned into something completely different by artists from all over the world.
It’s all in hopes of getting young kids to fall in love with art. Kids like second grader Connor who talks about the inspiration for the monster he created.
“I really like video games so I made the head like a video game and then I made the body have a little video game thing on it,” Connor says. “He hasn't destroyed the city yet, but yes, he will destroy it soon.”
Connor was very excited to take part in The Monster Project.
“At first it was just like a bunch of little pieces, the pieces transformed, came together and formed a giant creature, as you can see in the picture,” Connor says.
Katie Johnson created The Monster Project. She takes the children’s creations and posts them online.
“It's like Christmas for me whenever we get the new monsters,” Johnson says.
Johnson reaches out to more than 100 artists all across the world and those artists are then able to take these little monsters and recreate them.
“I think people are so willing to do that because they remember a moment when a person in their childhood who sent them in an artistic path and they want to give that to these kids and they want to be that support for them,” Johnson says.
Growing up in a creative household, Johnson had a chance to explore her own imagination from a small age.
She wanted to pay it forward and give these kids a chance to see what can happen if they just keep their imagination and creative process going.
And the kids seem to love it.
“Whether they end up being a professional artist or not, the fact that they are so inspired and excited about their ideas, and excited about creativity, that’s exactly why I do this and it’s a great feeling,” Johnson says.
It’s a feeling shared by The Monster Project’s volunteers who may just be helping the next big artist of our time one piece of art at a time.
Perhaps Connor will be the next big artist. He got a special animated monster from her artists and says he knows exactly what he wants to be when he grows up.
“I want to play video games when I grow up. I want to play them and design them and I think it’s really cool,” Connor says.
The Monster Project is always looking for artists to volunteer their time. The group also has a Kickstarter fundraiser page underway right now. It wants to continue to help children with their dreams.
