Operation Turkey in need of volunteers, donations

Operation Turkey works to give those less fortunate and in need a hot meal and warm clothes on Thanksgiving. This year 8,000 meals will be served in Austin and 30,000 meals in 10 cities across five states.

The non-profit started in Austin with one meal.  It's a family friendly volunteer opportunity from decorating to-go boxes to driving meals around town. If you or someone you know needs a warm meal you can submit a request form online.

Volunteers are encouraged to sign up beforehand so organizers know how many people to expect. The group is also asking that people bring toiletry items.

By the numbers here are the amounts of turkey and sides that will be fixed, served and delivered.

18,240 pounds of turkey
6,650 pounds of mashed potatoes
4,452 pounds of candied yams
3,816 pounds of green beans
4,452 pounds of corn
2,226 pounds of stuffing
640 pounds of gravy
