Meteor streaks across the sky from Las Vegas to Ventura, CA

- A fireball streaked through the Southern California sky tonight, prompting hundreds of social media posts and plenty of speculation before officials at the Griffith Observatory said it was a meteor.

The meteor was reported and captured on video by observers from Arizona, Nevada and California.

The director of the observatory, Edwin C. Krupp, was prepping for interviews with broadcast reporters even as some commentators posted jokes about a second launch of Elon Musk's SpaceX rocket, which managed a vertical landing in Florida last night.

Others wondered earlier on Twitter whether the streak of light was from a missile.

The observatory lists the Quadrantids meteor shower as active Dec. 28 through Jan. 12, but predicted poor viewing conditions this year.

Krupp was not immediately available by telephone to say whether
tonight's meteor was part of the Quadrantids.
