Paralyzed 6-year old gifted wheelchair-accesible van

Kai Gonzalez is paralyzed from the chest down following a car accident in 2015 -- and now her community is coming together to try and make life a bit easier for her and her family.

The sales team and managers at Scott Clark Toyota in Matthews donated a wheelchair-accessible van to Kai and her mother. The family had started a Go Fund Me Page for a van and raised more than $7,000 -- but the dealership wanted to provide them their own van, free of charge.

Here's the kicker -- timing was everything. The dealership said in nearly a decade, it's only had two wheelchair accessible vans traded in -- and one came right after it heard about Kai's family needing one.

Joyce Leatherwood, of Rock Hill, just so happened to step inside Scott Clark Toyota looking for a trade-in after her husband, who was disabled, passed away in 2014. She finally had decided to do something with the van they used for him -- and now that van belongs to Kai's family.

"It's just a very touching experience and we're very thankful," Kai's mother Shelby King said.

King said the family will take the money already raised through its Go Fund Me account and start a trust fund for Kai.
