Vandals drive through North Austin cemetery

A place to honor loved ones is being overrun as vandals strike a North Austin cemetery yet again. It's the third time in recent years that vandals have hit the Fiskville Cemetery where graves date back to the 1850's.

"Tears me up inside. It's getting closer and closer to my families graves," says cemetery worker Robert Caraway. Caraway does lawn care at Fiskville.

It was Friday morning when Caraway noticed someone had driven across the graves and knocked two telephone poles over. Parts of the fencing are also missing. It's something that Caraway doesn't want to see happen again.

"See if we can get APD to patrol this more because we've been getting more and more damage at the cemetery," says Caraway.

Back in April, a dozen headstones in the oldest portion of the cemetery were damaged. Some lay in pieces, others had been twisted or moved off the foundation. Prior to that, someone spray-painted the headstones. The total damage for both incidents was around $20,000.

The Austin Police Department has fought the vandals for years, patrolling the cemetery and installing cameras. Now that crimes are picking back up, they say they will put those efforts back to work.

"We work hard out here to take care of the cemetery. It's a lot of work out here to do, to keep it up," says Caraway.

And keeping the cemetery in order is not easy because it runs only on donations. That's why Caraway wants whoever is doing this to stop, and show respect to those who are no longer with us.

The cemetery is located off Rundberg Lane and I-35. If you have any information related to these crimes, you're asked to call the Austin Police Department.
