Battling cancer down the runway

A special fashion show was held in Austin. This one featured teens taking their battle with cancer down the runway, strutting their strength and showing that anything is possible.

You would never know that the teens are each fighting their own battle. Some with cancer, others with blood disorders.

"I really enjoy getting done up because my hair is growing back from the chemo and treatments. Sometimes I don't feel very pretty because it's really curly and it's different and different color. I have an awesome mohawk right now. It's really awesome to go and feel really good about yourself again," says Koreen Fedrick, patient.

This is the first year for "Take to the Runway." It gives young patients from Dell Children's Blood and Cancer Center the chance to shine. 18 girls and three boys were able to showcase the latest trends.

"We may not have the same diagnosis, but we all understand that we feel sick and we all get treatment and we all go to the same hospital. So we all get to share in our own way, experiences. I've made really good friends throughout this whole thing," says Fredrick.

Everything was donated; from hair and makeup, to clothing. Saturday's event was sponsored by Wild Orchid Salon and Charles Maund Toyota. It was an idea inspired by these beautiful children.

"I've been volunteering with the center for about three years. Their spirit, the kids' spirit and strength, and what they've overcome and their positivity and how amazing they handle it, is inspiring," says Aysa Province, Take to the Runway organizer.

Dell Children's has a prom every year so Province thought, why not give these kids more opportunites to feel beautiful.

"I just saw how getting their hair done, their makeup done, getting dressed up, their faces would light up," says Province. And a look at the families in the crowd showed that it wasn't just the faces of the teens with smiles on their faces.

All of the children involved got jewelry and clothing to take home. Organizers plan to turn this into an annual event.
