Grandmother charged in deadly dog attack held on $50K bond

- A Hartwell grandmother charged with murder for the brutal mauling death of her toddler grandson waived her first court appearance Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Sandra Adams was babysitting 20-month-old Paris Adams Tuesday when the child was attacked by her two pit bulls. She's charged with second-degree murder, second-degree cruelty to children and involuntary manslaughter.

"It was tough, put it like this, I didn't sleep too well last night," Hartwell Chief Anthony Davis exclaimed.

Parks White, District Attorney for the Northern Circuit of Georgia, said at a news conference Wednesday that Mrs. Adams had been granted a $50,000 bond, which she has not yet posted.

White also said the grandmothers' two dogs will be put down "as soon as we can put them down." The animals are currently under observation at a kennel.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Adams and the child were outside of her home on Highland Avenue before the attacked happened. The report said, as Adams entered her home, the dogs ran out of the back door, knocking Adams to the ground, and attacked the baby.

After a struggle, Adams was eventually able to break the dogs away from the child, the report said. She then drove to pick up the child’s mother and transported the baby to the Reddy Urgent Care, where the child was later pronounced dead.

According to the GBI, Adams had been cited multiple times by the Hartwell Police Department under a city ordinance maintaining disorderly animals.

Adams remains behind bars in Hart County.
