Police investigate double shooting in East Austin

Austin Police are investigating after two people were shot in East Austin early Tuesday morning. It happened around 2 a.m. near the intersection of East 22nd and Coleto Streets.

One neighbor who lives near the intersection tells FOX 7 she was sitting outside and heard the commotion.

"I was sitting on the porch and it was dead silence. I heard a bit of commotion coming from a block away. After that commotion I heard nothing but multiple shots. Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop and then I heard screaming after that," said Sasha.

"Officers arrived to find two gunshot wound victims," said APD Sgt. Matthew Wright.

Police say a man and a woman in their mid to late 30s were shot. EMS treated the two at the scene and transported them to UMC Brackenridge with non-life threatening injuries.

"It was frightening and you couldn't mistake it for anything else. It wasn't fireworks. I knew exactly what it was," said Sasha.

Sgt. Wright says the two victims live in the neighborhood. Police received several 911 calls about the gunfire. Officers spent part of the morning processing the scene looking for evidence and taking statements from witnesses.

"We do have some leads but we can't elaborate on what those leads are," said Sgt. Wright.

Some neighbors say what happened is alarming and they, like Sasha, hope police are able to quickly find the shooter.

"I just hope whoever was hurt is okay," said Sasha.

Police are still working to determine the nature of the call. While they have leads they do not have anyone in custody yet.
