As Obamacare deadline looms, many waiting until last minute

Insure Central Texas is a busy place this weekend.  The deadline for Obamacare enrollment is 11:59 p.m. Sunday night.

With "Navigators" and Certified Application Counselors, the non-profit is helping people enroll in one of the 115 health care plans available in our area before that deadline gets here.

"Now is really people's last chance to get insurance for 2015 if they don't have access to insurance through their employer," said director Elizabeth Colvin.

Insure Central Texas has a couple of locations in Austin...one of them is in Highland Mall.

Colvin says so far, everything has been going well considering the time crunch.

"It's been good, it's a much shorter enrollment period this year.  Last year we had 6 months, this year we had 3 months," she said.

After last year's nightmares with healthcare.gov, she says the website is getting better.

"The website has greatly improved this year but there's still sort of tricks and work-arounds that you need to know to be able to get through the application," Colvin said.

Lorretta Keeling and her husband came in for some assistance.

Before the Affordable Healthcare Act, they didn't have healthcare.

"We needed healthcare really bad.   So we were really excited when Obamacare came about and we were....'Oh yay we're gonna have healthcare,'" Keeling said.

Keeling says she signed up on her own last year but wasn't comfortable with the results.  This time was different.

"Sat down and went through the whole process with us and reviewed the plans that were in my budget and so now we're real happy, we even got dental and could afford it," Keeling said.

Director Colvin says they got really busy this week because so many people waited until the last minute...something she doesn't suggest.

"Don't wait until the last minute.  We don't know exactly what the enrollment period will be for 2016, we expect it to be about October through December and I just encourage people to get it done in October," Colvin said.

"We're really excited about being covered and being able to go see the doctor when we need to go.  And that's what's most important," Keeling said.

Insure Central Texas says their Highland Mall Office will be open from 10 to 5 Sunday.

And their other location on West Gate will be open from 9 to 5.  They've seen hundreds Saturday and expect even more Sunday so they're planning on long lines.
