Daylong SWAT standoff in West Lake Hills ends peacefully

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo says a daylong standoff in West Lake Hills has ended peacefully.

According to authorities, the standoff suspect surrendered and came out on his own Wednesday night. He will be booked in the Travis County Jail.

The standoff began Tuesday night. The armed man is in his 50s and barricaded inside his home near Brady Lane and Hatley Drive.

The location of the home is near where West Lake Hills and Rollingwood meet up. Police say the man's mother called 9-1-1 and said that her son was intoxicated and that he might hurt himself. When West Lake police arrived one shot was fired, no one was hurt, and they called for backup and the Travis County Sheriff's SWAT team arrived.

Eight hours later, SWAT left believing the situation was "stable" but the man had never come out of the home. Then APD SWAT arrived to the scene for a follow-up. FOX 7 is told that the same man is still inside the house.

Multiple agencies are on the scene. The area had just reopened and people had been allowed to reenter and leave their homes but police have now closed the area again. Austin police is assisting West Lake police.

Sounds of gunfire were heard throughout the quiet neighborhood. The man fired several shots from his home.

"As I stepped out the door a swat vehicle came roaring down the street," a neighbor told FOX 7.

The standoff closed several roads. People living in the area weren't able to get home or leave their homes. Brady Lane is expected to reopen soon.
