APD paperwork sheds light on what led to Thursday night's SWAT standoff

Thursday night, 20-year-old Dominique Devon Smith walked out of his relative's house on Kings Point and put his hands up...but police say he didn't comply with SWAT commands so they shot him with a mix of less lethal rounds -- including bean bag pellets.

The angry crowd of onlookers didn't know he wasn't being hit with real bullets.

But how did all of this start?

According to police paperwork, it started in broad daylight Thursday afternoon.

A man dialed 911 who had followed 2 young men a couple of streets over to Bryn Mawr Drive watching their behavior.

The caller told police they were knocking on doors and if no one answered, they would go into the backyard to try and break in.

A police officer with his weapon drawn caught the suspects in the act trying to get into a house through a back porch.

Police say 18-year-old Jerome Yancey responded to the officer's commands and was arrested...but the other young man took off.

Walter and Edna Allen have lived on Bryn Mawr for about 50 years.

Edna had just poured herself a cup of coffee Thursday afternoon when she saw something through her backdoor.

"I thought I saw some legs underneath that big Holly Berry bush and I thought 'Am I seeing things?'" Edna said.

She soon realized the mysterious figure was in her yard.

"So I opened the back sliding door here just a little bit and I hollered at him, I said 'Hey!  What are you doing in my backyard?'  And he took off running and he jumped that side fence over there and I could tell that he fell.  He must have caught his foot on the fence I guess," she said.

Edna says her heart was beating fast.

"I really didn't know what to do, it just nearly scared me to death and I noticed when he was running he turned and looked at me and he had on a ski mask, a black ski mask," she said.

The Allen's wondered whether the young man in their backyard was Dominique Smith -- who police say attacked an officer with a knife Thursday night.

Smith's name is omitted from the paperwork on Jerome Yancey because he hadn't been caught yet.  But it does say the young man who ran away was wearing a black ski mask.

18-year-old Jerome Yancey, the young man who police say complied and was arrested Thursday afternoon is charged with attempted burglary.

Dominique Smith is being charged with Attempted Capital Murder for his alleged attack on the officer with a knife.
