Fort Hood soldier kills 4, including himself

A domestic disturbance turned deadly in Killeen after a Fort Hood soldier shot and killed three people before killing himself.

Another person injured by gunfire is in the hospital.

Killeen Police say the shooter is 30-year-old Fort Hood soldier Atase Giffa.

We're told this isn't the first time they've responded to a domestic disturbance involving he and his wife.

Unfortunately this time, it ended badly.

Another shooting by a Fort Hood soldier; killing three people and injuring another before taking his own life.

Some neighbors say they never saw it coming.

"We've never had issues, never had any issues. Never had any complaints about our neighbors. There's never any wild parties going on. It's a quiet neighborhood and this is just like a freak incident," says Samuel Ernst, neighbor.

Killeen Police responded to 1706 Godman around 10:30 Sunday night regarding an armed man and several shots being fired.

Upon entry they found multiple gunshot victims, who we're told were friends of the suspect.

"Apparently the wife was at 1706. So apparently they had all lived around each other because their houses were 7906, 1709 and 1710. Not so much 1709 involved, however, the residents from 1709 were shot. So we had one victim that had gone back over there. Apparently he came over, something didn't sit right and he decided to use a gun to make it right," says Carroll Smith, Public Affairs Officer, Killeen Police Department.

A witness told police the suspect and his wife had fled back to their home, which is two doors down.

Shortly after, shots were heard coming from inside.

The Tactical Response Unit was called to the scene where several attempts to speak with the suspect were made.

After no response, they entered the home where they found 30-year-old Fort Hood soldier Atase Giffa and a female victim dead.

"Unfortunately there were some feelings, and again, the passion is involved. Domestic situations are a whole different scenario than anything else because a lot of times there are men and women that say 'if I can't have you, then nobody will.' I don't know if that was the situation now but it's a very volatile situation. Officers have to train on it constantly because they never know what they're going up against,'" says Smith.

The victims are being identified as 31-year-old Lydia Farina, 41-year-old Larry Guzman and 28-year-old Dawn Giffa, who is the wife of the suspect.

Police say they had just responded to a domestic disturbance at their home a few weeks ago.

They encourage the community to keep an eye out and take action when something isn't right.

"Any kind of indication that someone might be feeling like this, give us a call. We'll definitely come out because you never know when someone is going to snap. You never know when someone is going to go off and that's the problem that we deal with," says Smith.

A 41-year-old female victim remains in critical condition at Baylor Scott and White Memorial Hospital, police believe she will recover.

Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division are continuing to investigate this incident.
