Construction to begin on the second piece of MOPAC pedestrian bridge Monday night

If you plan to get out and about Monday night, avoid MOPAC between Parmer and Braker Lane.

Construction crews will install the second piece of a pedestrian bridge as part of the MOPAC Improvement Project.

The center and right southbound lanes are closed.

Portions of the Frontage Road are closed as well.

Once crews move the actual piece into place, all lanes will be shut down for as little as 10 minutes to an hour.

Earlier the piece of the bridge was in the median of MOPAC. It measures 525 feet long so it's longer than a football field.

Crews installed the middle portion on April 9th.

This bridge will be part of a bike and pedestrian path connecting the North Walnut Creek Trail to Capital of Texas Highway near the Arboretum.

"As we know Austin is a very bike and pedestrian-centric community. A lot of runners. A lot of bicyclists. So there's tremendous interest in this bridge as well as the improvements we're making to the shared use paths along the corridor. It will really link together a number of trails in that part of town," said Steve Pustelnyk with the MOPAC Improvement Project.

Lane closures will last overnight.

All lanes will be open in time for your morning work commute.

The last portion of the bridge will be installed Thursday evening.
