APD warning public of sexual assault suspect after two crimes reported

Austin police are warning residents who live around the I-35 and 290 corridor to keep their doors and windows locked.

Officers are investigating two "home invasion-style" sex assaults.

The most recent assault happened here at the Salado at Walnut Creek Apartments off 183 near Rutherford on Sunday night. It's four miles from the first assault.

Here's a map showing the two locations. Police say the first woman was attacked on April 15th at an apartment called the DJ House off Bennett Avenue. That's near Airport and 45th Street.

Both assaults occurred at 11:30 at night. Both victims were inside their homes when the suspect broke in.

Neighbors at the DJ House say in that case a man climbed in through a window that was unlocked.

The victim has since moved out. We spoke with a man who lives in the building about what happened. He did not wish to be identified.

"I was at the gym and my neighbor texted me, we're pretty close friends and said the neighbor that got assaulted ran across into her apartment because a man broke in through a window, pretty much maced her, forced her down and assaulted her and robbed her and he left. So I got here when the cops were here," he said.

The description of the suspect is as follows: a black male, 6'2" in height with a thin to medium build.

Police say they hope to release a sketch soon.

In the meantime officers are asking anyone who lives around these locations to lock their doors and windows. And call 9-1-1 to report suspicious activity.
