Austin group helps female veterans

Women vets, and the wives, mothers, daughters and sisters of vets are a group with distinct needs and challenges. In Austin there are two women that are doing everything they can to help those people re-connect.

They created the F7 group two years ago.

"The F7 Group is about all the women who serve the military community. It's about reminding them who they are and recognizing their own value," said Victoria Wegwert.

They say women vets have different needs from the men.

"Women are the worst and the best at putting themselves last on the list. They'll help everyone before themselves and by the time they do quite often there nothing left," Wegwert said.

F7 holds workshops and symposiums, like one last week in the Dallas area where they bring military women together and try to create a relaxed setting.

"It reminds people how to plug back into themselves and to remind them they are not alone. Hopelessness is the biggest factor some of these people deal with. They can feel very isolated," said Wegwert.

F7 provides a network of organizations and groups that they trust that can help female vets with whatever they may need and not just jobs, but also things like healthcare, childcare, and housing.

"They can come to us and know that whoever we refer them to is a safe, vetted organization...that's the biggest part of what we do. We are a hub and we have a lot of spokes in the community that we refer people to," said Cassandra St. John.

They say F7 group is the only female vet group by and for female vets in the country and they hope to expand beyond their Texas network.

"It's the most satisfying thing I've ever done in my life. Cassandra and I do this not because there a check attached," Wegwert said.

Victoria and Cassandra are the only ones doing this for free. Their entire partner group across the state also volunteers their help.

If you want to help F7 or you think they might be able to help you, the best way to get in touch is their website-
