City of Austin looking to hire lifeguards

We're still in the thick of winter but the City of Austin is gearing up for summer. Friday, February 27th begins the first of several hiring dates looking for lifeguards.

Last June, a dozen of the city's pools couldn't open on time because there weren't enough lifeguards, so this year, the City of Austin is starting the hiring process earlier. Summer is still months away but the City of Austin wants to get lifeguards hired and more importantly trained.

"The challenge really comes from that over half of our lifeguard workforce being high school students. The challenge is getting them to think in advance that now is the time to go and apply to be a lifeguard so they're ready to go on the first day of summer break," said Cheryl Bolin, Division Manager, Aquatics & Athletics.

There's a week long 40 hour training course that's mandatory. It helps you get certified and know the basics.

"CPR certified. AED certified. Lifeguard certified. So that includes actually doing the academic test and actually doing the physical part of the CPR test and swimming tests," Bolin said.

Austin Parks and Rec needs to hire 750 lifeguards to oversee 50 of its pools and aquatic centers.

The city is offering six hiring dates over the next few months to give people the chance to apply and train.

Anyone older than 15 can apply, with salaries ranging up to $10.25 an hour.

To apply, go to the Aquatic Administration and Training Facility on 2818 San Gabriel and fill out an application and be interviewed.
