Clarissa (Contreras) Lopez, daughter of Conrado Contreras, released a heartfelt statement on Wednesday. Contreras was gunned down inside the lobby of the OMNI Hotel by 35-year-old Michael Holt who was armed with a rifle.
On behalf of myself and the Contreras family, we would like everyone to know we are touched by the outpouring of love, support and prayers. I would like to share a little about my father, Conrad Contreras, so that everyone can know him as the father I knew.
My father was born in Beeville, Texas. He proudly served his country in the Navy in the early years of his life traveling extensively overseas. He kept the US flag in his cab proudly displaying his service. He then returned from the Navy & attended college where he obtained a Bachelor's Degree from A&I University and earned two Master's Degrees from Sam Houston State University. He was also a devout Catholic.
He loved to travel, he enjoyed his coffee and morning newspaper & he loved his family. We are a very close knit family & we always take lots of pictures so we have many wonderful memories of him. I know in my heart that the day this occurred my father was trying to diffuse the situation and likely confront Mr. Holt. He was brave and feared no one except God. I believe his actions that day may have saved the lives of others & I commend officer Carlos Lopez & the Austin Police Department and all the others that were there that day to assist in this horrible situation that claimed the life of the father I loved so dearly. He would always tell us be 'magnanimous'.
We would especially like to thank Mr. Edward Kargbo, president of Yellow Cab for his immediate support, Trevino Funeral Home of Beeville, TX, several elected officials who have reached out to extend their condolences and the countless other cab drivers, colleagues, friends and numerous other people who have donated on Gofundme.com. Your love & support means the world to me and my family.
