Elderly couple dead after apparent murder/suicide at San Marcos hospital

An elderly couple are dead this afternoon after what police believe to be a murder/suicide at a San Marcos hospital.

Police say the shooting happened inside a private patient room at the Central Texas Medical Center a little before 8 Tuesday morning

San Marcos Police tell Fox 7 a family member found the husband and wife about 10 to 15 minutes after the shooting. Police say no one heard the gunshots...possibly due to the muffled hospital rooms.

Apparently the elderly couple were in their late 80's and don't live in Hays County. Police chief Chase Stapp says one of them had been diagnosed with a serious medical condition. He says since no note was left they're trying to dig into whether the patient's diagnosis was a part of this in some way.

"It's a very unfortunate situation, very sad situation. But we do want to reiterate that the public was not in any danger. No other patrons of the hospital were believed to be in danger. It was not an active shooter type situation. It was very much limited and confined to what was going on inside that patient room," Stapp said.

Central Texas Medical Center says in a statement this was an isolated incident that didn't physically impact staff or patients, saying in part:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family involved, as well as the staff who cared for them."

Police won't say whether it was the spouse who initially fired the gun or the patient.
