Two suspicious packages found in Central Texas

Two suspicious packages were found in Central Texas tonight. One was in Cedar Park the other in downtown Austin.

The first case happened around 5:00 pm on Ninth and Congress, just down the street from the Capitol.

Several buildings were evacuated and the road was closed while police investigated. The bomb squad was dispatched when investigators reported an envelope in a receiving box that contained a white substance.

It's unclear what that substance was or if anyone was in any danger. The package was taken in for testing and Congress has reopened.

The second package was reported around 7:00 pm on Brashear in Cedar Park.

A resident called police to report a black box and a cell phone in the front yard of a home. It turned out to be surveying equipment so there was never any danger.

Several homes were evacuated though out of an abundance of caution.

APD says employee at 804 Congress Ave. opened an envelope and white powder came out of it.  Austin Fire is assisting Austin Police in investigating the suspicious package.

AustinFireInfo released the following information...

Re Haz mat investigation 804 Congress. Austin Fire is assisting Austin Police in investigating a suspicious package. The area around the package has been isolated and the building evacuated. APD is lead agency and any further questions should be directed to them.
