Homeless housing project to open this fall

Very soon, dozens of homeless people will move into a forever home. Community First Village is set to open this fall. On Friday, FOX 7 got a tour to see the progress.

These four walls will soon surround someone who at this very moment may be searching for a place to sleep tonight.

It's one of 150 homes under construction at Mobile Loaves and Fishes' Community First Village in Southeast Travis County. It will soon provide permanent housing for the disabled, chronically homeless.

"The people who really are at the bottom of every relief list you could possibly be a part of," said Mobile Loaves and Fishes Spokesperson Sarah Boettcher.

This particular model will be called "porch with a home." It is sponsored by Don Crowell Builders.

"You know, as soon as you hear about the project it's an instant 'yes.' So many good feelings, so many good intentions behind it," said Shawn Brown.

Don Crowell Builders will construct nine homes on the property.

In all, there are more than three dozen builders donating their skills and time.

Two types of homes are offered: micro homes which cost between $325 to 375 dollars a month and cottages which are the cheapest option at $225 dollars a month. In addition, there will be 100 r-vs set up. Rent for those is $380 dollars a month.

All are less than 200 square feet and come fully furnished.

"We believe that the number one cause of homelessness is a catastrophic loss of family. And the name Community First comes out of that because we need the entire community comes behind us to be that support net, to be that family," said Boettcher.

Spokesperson Sarach Boettcher gave us a tour of the property. She says 45 people will move in some time this fall. The remaining 205 will be phased in over the next two to three years.

Occupants must pay rent, and abide by civil law and h-o-a rules which are yet to be established.

"To be a gift to anybody, you have to have a settlement. You have to be able to go home at night. You have to be able to feel purpose. You need to be able to feel your worth and your dignity," said Boettcher.

In addition to the homes out here, there is a community garden. A small grocery store and clinic will be built soon. Occupants will be able to work here to help pay for rent. Cap Metro has set up a bus line to provide transportation.
