Thousands of Central Texans without power following strong storms

Thousands of people are waking up to down tree limbs and no power Saturday morning after strong storms pushed through Central Texas.

Austin Energy reports more than 6,000 customers are without power. At one point in the morning that number was even higher.

Crews have been dispatched around the city to make repairs. Austin Firefighters report tree limbs down along with power limbs across South and Central Austin. Not far from Austin Bergstrom International Airport at least 15 power poles are on the ground or out of place thanks to the wind. First responders caution people who are out driving to be aware of any power lines or tree limbs that may be on the roads.

Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative is reporting more than 9,000 customers are without power and at least 471 people have called. The numbers change as crews are able to make repairs. If you're a Bluebonnet customer and need to report an outage call 800-949-4414.

Pedernales Electric Cooperative reports more than 1,000 of its customers are without power.

In Kyle, firefighters say the strong winds pushed an 18-wheeler over onto its side. The crash closed two of the right lanes on northbound I-35 while crews worked to tow the truck away. It appeared to be a U.S. Mail truck. KFD sent FOX 7 a picture from the scene.

In Bastrop viewers are reporting significant damage from the wind including down trees and broken windows. Wind damaged the Bastrop County Animal Shelter but a spokesperson says all of the animals are safe but they are anticipating an influx of pets due to the severe weather. They do need people to rescue or foster the pets that they already have.
