Garfield cleaning up after severe weather rips through their small town

Though we saw warm temperatures and blue skies Saturday, many were still feeling the aftermath of the severe weather that ripped through Central Texas Friday night into early Saturday morning.

The neighborhood off of Caldwell Lane in Garfield was just one area hit hard by powerful winds, rain and hail.

The sounds of chainsaws could be heard echoing throughout the tiny town.

"I'm surprised as far as they were down pretty deep as you can tell they still come up with the roots and stuff," Victor Riojas talks about the two large trees uprooted in his backyard. Those two large trees crushed two of his cars parked in his backyard. "It didn't try missing one, each one got one," he said.

His cars were crushed, but from what he heard early in the morning he thought it was going to be much worse.

"Started praying lord, need to calm this down cause we don't know what's going on. I started (to) check everywhere around, and told everybody, 'hey get away from the windows' cause I was afraid something would come through," Riojas said.

Down the street Crystal Boyd was not so lucky.

"The tree hit the roof, (and) went through the roof. It rattled us for sure, it scared us, we didn't know what it was, I mean you heard it left and right." The sound is something she said she will never forget. "Just a loud chilling sound, you could hear the wind, i thought it was a tornado."

Along with the damage, the residents were left in the dark. John Syme has lived in Garfield for nearly 30 years and said he's never seen a storm like this one. "I've already seen probably 10 or 15 places where the power lines are just ripped down, power poles are tore out of the ground. It could be a day or two up to Monday before everybody gets power back on."

But with no power, damaged homes, and demolished cars, these residents still saw some light after the storm. "Everybody's okay. Thank god," said Riojas.
