(Austin, Texas) – Drivers should be prepared for a new temporary lane and ramp configuration on southbound MoPac between US 183 and RM 2222 beginning at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3, 2016.
The lane realignment is needed so construction crews can widen the outside or right hand shoulder of the roadway. The same number of lanes will remain open, but they will shift left and a concrete barrier will be added along the right hand shoulder of the roadway.
The southbound realignment will require a slight curve to the left just south of the US 183 interchange and a curve back to the right at RM 2222, so drivers are urged to slow down to 50 mph and use caution when travelling in this area. Entrance and exit ramps in the area will also be temporarily reconfigured. Drivers entering southbound MoPac at US 183 should be especially alert for the new ramp alignment.
These temporary changes are expected to be in place for the next two months as workers widen the roadway and then apply new asphalt over all of the lanes.
The MoPac North project is adding approximately 11 miles of Express Lanes, 7 miles of soundwalls, 3 miles of bike and pedestrian facilitates, and significant aesthetic upgrades from north of Parmer Lane to Cesar Chavez Street. Ultimately, the Express Lanes will provide individual drivers, transit buses and emergency vehicles a free flowing congestion free route.
