Toddler found on street alone

For the third time in less than a month a small child has been found wandering alone, along an Austin street.

The two-year-old girl was found Monday morning on a street corner, alone, with no shoes on, shivering and crying. APD Sgt Steve Urias said, the child was spotted, investigators said, by a man heading to work who stopped and called police.

"He put a hoodie on her to keep her warm, she was crying so he comforted her somewhat, until the police got here. At least he took that step to stop, know something was wrong with this child, and she needed to be safe."

Austin police searched the area around the intersection of Willow Creek Dr. and Anken. Residents like Gary Cronkite, were asked if they recognized the child who was being kept warm in a patrol car.

"I think she was just fine sitting there with the officer, she didn't seem to be upset at all."

After nearly two hours, the mother emerged from the current apartment complex. She told investigators that when she woke up - she found the door unlocked, ajar and her daughter missing.

"We don’t have any suspicion the child was mistreated in any way, or  malnourished but it is still under investigation, the will be some hard questions for the lady to answer as to why the child was missing about 2 hours without her knowing about it,” said Sgt Urias.

The mother, and the 2-year old’s 5-year-old sibling, were taken by a Victim's Services officer to be interviewed by CPS caseworkers.

As of Monday afternoon no charges had been filed. The incident appears to be the start of a troubling trend. Last month, 2 other small children were found on a busy street wandering alone.

An Austin police officer found a toddler in the middle of the night April 13th on Montoplis Drive. April 4th, another child was also rescued by an APD patrol officer. He was found in a neighborhood near the intersection of east William Cannon and south Pleasant Valley Rd. In both cases - no charges were filed.
