May 11th is "Austin, Don't Rush" day

May 11th has been designated "Austin, Don't Rush" by Mayor Steve Adler and the mayor is asking that we in the city use any transportation option other than driving in a car alone during rush hours.

Mayor Adler said that If enough people are willing to participate, the traffic flow will improve. He added, that the day is to help show people, who drive alone to get to and from work daily, that it is not hard to choose other traveling options.

The website, movabilityaustin.org, lists several ways we can participate in Austin, Don't Rush including leaving for work prior to or after 7:00 AM - 9:00 AM and returning home before or after 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM. Options also include using public transportation, riding a bike, or carpooling with a friend or coworker.

According to the website, Capital Metro and Austin B-cylce are offering free rides and services throughout the day and other options like Zipcar and Car2go are offering reduced or free signups.

The site is also encouraging employers to show some flexibility to workers that participate.
