Driverless cars about to hit the streets in Austin

Austin is one step closer to being the second city in the U.S. to have a driver-less car. Google's fully self driving prototypes will will be hitting the streets in a few weeks. The cars are already testing in Mountain View California, Google's hometown where they were created.

For the past two months, Google has been testing the driver-less technology here in Austin using 6 Lexus SUV's. They have safety drivers on board. The prototypes will also have safety drivers on board. Google doesn't yet have a timeline for when they'll be testing them driver free.

The tech giant says the cars are designed to make streets safer and help traffic flow better. Researchers say Austinites spend about 52 hours a year stuck in traffic. The prototypes will be tested for how they respond to traffic, construction, objects in the road and weather conditions. They'll be tested in a small area North and Northeast of downtown.

Google is looking for the public's feedback once the cars hit the road. They'll have a URL on the back where feedback can be sent in.
