Suspect in shooting of Travis Co. judge has court setting

The suspect in the ambush shooting of Travis County Judge, Julie Kocurek is back on the court docket.

Chimene Onyeri's attorney stood in the courtroom on his behalf Thursday where Judge Julie Kocurek bravely returned to work a little over three months ago.

She was shot outside of her home in November of last year. Onyeri has been named a suspect.

Kocurek described the crime as 30 seconds of extreme horror.

She used her arm to shield her head as bullets came her way. She lost an index finger and nearly lost her middle finger. She also endured facial injuries.

"I feel like divine intervention saved my life on November 6th and I am very thankful to be here and to be able to get my life back,” Kocurek said on February 29th.

Prior to the shooting Onyeri was on Kocurek's docket. She was expected to revoke his community supervision sentence for a 2013 identity theft conviction.

Days after the shooting, Onyeri appeared in a Harris County courtroom on a murder charge. The charge has since been dismissed.

In December, Onyeri was indicted for racketeering in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana. He and two other men are cited in 20 thefts.

That indictment will come into play here in Travis County as the district attorney's office prepares to hold the hearing to revoke his community supervision.

The DA's office also alleges that Onyeri failed to report to his supervisor twice, failed to submit a urine and breath test, and traveled outside the county on multiple occasions without permission.

The hearing could happen as soon as July 19th. Onyeri faces up to 20 years in prison.
