Fayette County officials have announced that 30 pounds of meth, worth about $1.3 million, was recently seized during a traffic stop. The meth was hidden inside fire extinguishers.
Sheriff Keith Korenek says that Sgt. Randy Thumann and K9 partner Lobos conducted a traffic stop on a 2007 Chevrolet pickup on IH-10 at the 666 eastbound mile marker.
Sgt. Thumann made contact with the driver, identified as 37-year-old Alberto Gamez, who was extremely nervous. Gamez was driving a vehicle he didn't own and also displayed suspicious registration information.
A road side interview was conducted and Sgt. Thumann was able to disprove Gamez's itinerary.
Gamez gave consent for the vehicle to be searched and four new fire extinguishers were found hidden throughout the truck. Sgt. Thumann had previously encountered extinguishers used to hide drugs and upon cutting them open the 30 pounds of meth was found.
Gamez was arrested and is now in jail.
