Record peak demand for electricty as triple digit heat continues

The triple digit heat continues and the Electric Reliability Countil of Texas (ERCOT) is working extra hard to keep the power flowing and all those air conditioners on.

ERCOT hit another record on August 8. It reported demand peaked at more than 70,000 megawatts between 4-5 p.m. The previous record was set last year around the same time.

One megawatt is enough to power about 200 homes running air conditioners during hot weather.

ERCOT says the grid has sufficient generation to meet the demand but asks people to help lighten the load by making a few changes.

  • Turn off unnecessary lights, appliances and electric equipment
  • Close blinds and drapes to keep the sun out
  • Set your to AC to 78 degrees or higher and turn it up to 85 when you leave
  • Use fans to cool rooms
  • Don't use major appliances during the peak hours of 3-7 p.m.
  • Use your microwave instead of your oven
  • Avoid opening refrigerator and freezer doors more than necessary
