Texas State San Marcos campus classes canceled due to weather

Flooding prompted Texas State University to cancel classes on Monday. The San Marcos River is out of its banks. When the river floods, it flows over Aquarena Springs Drive which is a main artery into campus. Aquarena is back open now, but there is still some water on the roadway.

The trouble began around 11:30. Students told FOX 7 told parking lots had to be evacuated as the water rose threatening to flood vehicles. Bus routes had to be altered. As high water became a problem Texas State officials made the call to cancel classes from 1 to 5 PM.

A crowd of students after they were told to leave campus. Caitlin McDermott explains what the situation was like.

"Campus is underwater. It's miserable. Walking up the stairs to Alkek is like walking through Niagara Falls and walking up to old main was a river itself. It's slanted down from each ends so it's like a river talking you backwards," McDermott, a Texas State student said.

Elsewhere in the city, a number of low water crossings are closed. Flooding is evident along I-35. We saw cars halfway underwater in an apartment parking lot.

The city is encouraging students and residents to register for weather alerts at sanmarcostx.Gov/alerts. They do feel the situation is improving.

Texas State University Police announced that classes on the San Marcos campus have been suspended due to weather. Offices and operations remain open.

Officials say they will make a determination at around 3 p.m. as to whether evening classes will go on as scheduled.

FOX 7 is following the story and the weather in San Marcos and will update as more information becomes available.
