Teen dies in auto pedestrian crash in New Braunfels

A 17-year-old is dead after an auto pedestrian crash in New Braunfels. It happened at around 8:15 a.m. in the 3900 block of I-35 North.

Crews arrived to find the teen lying in the middle of the interstate. EMS arrived and determined that life saving measures would be ineffective and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim has been identified as 17-year-old Hunter Michael Thornton of San Marcos.

The following statement was released by Superintendent Michael Carona of San Marcos CISD:

Dear San Marcos Community,

I have sad news to report to you. It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I inform you that San
Marcos High School student  Hunter Thornton died as a result of an incident that occurred off campus
on Friday morning.

As you can imagine, this is a terribly difficult time for our school community. I encourage parents to
take this opportunity to speak with your children about this situation. Please contact the school if your
child needs additional help, but is unwilling to ask on his or her own.

Counselors are on campus to provide support to students and staff and answer any questions they
might have. They will continue to be available to speak with any student who appears upset or who
needs help dealing with what has happened. We encourage you to reach out to the school if you think
your child may need any help or appears unduly upset by the news. We also know some students may
have other issues that become problematic when news of an incident such as this is made public. The
counselors can be helpful in this case as well. We are here to help in any way we can.

Our hearts go out to the friends and family of Hunter as well as to our entire school community. Hunter
was a great student who will be missed, and we ask that you keep his family in your thoughts.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact the high school office at
512-393-6800.

Sincerely,
Michael A. Cardona

Officials say the 17-year-old male pulled his pickup truck over into the median, exited the vehicle and they believe intentionally walked directly in front of an oncoming 18 wheeler. The driver of the 18 wheeler was not hurt.

No charges are expected to be filed at this time.
