Two Eanes ISD elementary schools collect more than 11K socks for homeless

5th graders from Forest Trail Elementary and Valley View Elementary collected more than 11,000 pairs of socks to give to local homeless shelters. It was all part of the national "Socktober" campaign promoted by Kid President.

Valley View was the winner of the friendly competition by collecting 5,742 pairs while Forest Trail collected 5,459.

Forest Trail has collected socks for four years but this is just the second year of the competition.

Valley View Principal Jenifer Dusek called the competition "fun" in a press release and said that "Collecting over 5,000 socks was an incredible feeling. We also thoroughly enjoyed invading Forest Trail's turf by taking over their playground as our playful reward!"

Forest Trail students also collected toiletries to put into the socks and make "sock care packages" to donate to homeless shelters. The students made the delivery to Caritas of Austin.

5th grade teacher at Forest Trail Laura Hitt says, "We want our students to know they can make good things happen and to encourage and inspire them to have a positive impact in their community and their world."
