Postal collection boxes to be temporarily removed for Papal visit

PHILADELPHIA — The United States Postal Service, working in conjunction with the Postal Inspection Service and other law enforcement agencies, will temporarily remove blue collection boxes in the following areas: Main Office Delivery 19104, William Penn Annex 19107, Fairmount Station 19130 and Spring Garden Station 19122 to increase public safety for the Pope’s visit to Philadelphia.

The collection boxes will be removed beginning Thursday evening, September 24, and will be reinstalled beginning Sunday, September 27th in the afternoon. Postal officials emphasize this is a precautionary security measure only.

Postal officials also announced a suspension in delivery and modification/closing of retail operations at several postal stations and branches in the impacted area. The following stations will not deliver mail on Saturday: Main Office Delivery 19102, 19103 & 19104, William Penn Annex 19106 & 19107, Fairmount Station 19130 and Spring Garden Station 19122 & 19123.

A list of stations adjusting retail hours follows this release.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
