Bat found at Austin Nature and Science Center tests positive for Rabies

A bat that tested positive for Rabies was found near Zilker Park and the Health Department is wanting to get the word out in case anyone came in contact with it.

The bat was found Sunday around 4:00 on a statue at the Austin Nature and Science Center.

It was during "Austin Museum Day" when people could get in free of charge.

Austin Parks and Rec along with the Austin-Travis County Health and Human services Department says the bat tested positive for Rabies.

Rabies exposure happens when you come in contact with a rabid animal -- like being bitten or scratched, among other ways.

Rabies is something you might not notice right away.

Sometimes it takes several weeks for people to show symptoms.

The health department says early signs of Rabies are fever, headache -- eventually leading to confusion, sleepiness or agitation.

The city says if you think you might have had direct contact with the bat, call the Disease Surveillance Program at (512) 972-5555.
