Man killed after firing gun at APD officers in downtown Austin

A 24-year-old African American man is dead after firing at Austin Police officers early Sunday morning.

Austin Police Chief Brian Manley says the incident started at 2:39 a.m. when officers heard a gunshot in the area. Through the HALO cameras that monitor downtown officers were able to find video of the suspect firing a gun outside a club near Sixth and Trinity.

Within about a minute of getting the description officers spotted the suspect and that's when a chase began. Officers chased the man for about a half of a block on Sixth street then he turned on to Trinity. The suspect turned to open fire on the officers.

Two APD officers fired back hitting the man. EMS took him to UMC Brackenridge where he died at 3:08 a.m.

Police collected casings in front of the night club and where the suspect fired at the officers that are consistent with the type of weapon the suspect was carrying.

APD is asking for any witnesses to come forward or anyone with any video to send that to police. The officers are on paid administrative leave pending the investigation.

The name of the suspect has not been released yet.
