Missing man's girlfriend asks for help to search wooded area

The girlfriend, common-law wife of a man who has been missing for almost three weeks said she knows something bad happened to him.

Jarri Roberts tells FOX 7 about the last time she heard from her husband, 64-year-old Larry Turner.

Turner was last seen at a parking lot near the IHOP on south IH-35 and Slaughter Lane.

Roberts said September 8 started off normal for her and Turner. He left home to pick up his driver's license and then attend a drug and alcohol class, but before he made it there, Roberts got a phone call she will never forget.

"About 11:15 he called me and it was like he was really hysterical. He said, 'I don't know what's going on here.' He said, 'They're after me I think.' He said, 'I don't know what's going on.' He said, 'The van's at the Slaughter Home Depot and IHOP,' and then the phone clicked," Roberts explained.

Roberts said she never heard from her husband again. She called police and 311 to report what happened, but said police did not take a report for a few more days.

Then Roberts took matters into her own hands and had his white van towed from the parking lot.

"I am his wife. I am worried sick. I go home every day and have to look at Larry's stuff and I don't know where he's at," Roberts said.

Police said the case hasn't been easy.

"The difficult challenges with this case, aside from any missing person that's an adult that can't be located, or the fact that we had a delay in reporting of three days, the vehicle I discussed and the conflicting statements that have been provided to law enforcement as of this date," said Austin Police Homicide Cold Case Det. J.J. Schmidt.

Schmidt said Turner was wearing a straw cowboy hat, blue shirt, blue jeans and walking with a cane the last time anyone saw him.

They said there may have been narcotics and money involved. Roberts said that's not true, but both parties are worried about Turner's whereabouts.

"Based on information conducted through interviews and other sources, we believe that Larry Turner, who was initially reported as missing, is now in danger," Schmidt said during a press conference Friday.

"He may be in these woods up here. That's all I can think of. I don't know what else to do. I've been coming here every day to this parking lot," Roberts said.

Police said they have since recovered the van and searched it for evidence.

Roberts and her step-son have been questioned several times. Now, she's hoping to start a search party for the wooded area around the IHOP parking lot.

"Whatever happened to Larry happened in this parking lot that day. Because he would not do that, I've been with him 19 years, I know him," Roberts said.

Police are asking anyone who saw Larry or his white van in the IHOP parking lot to call them with that information.

Turner's case is being investigated by the Missing Persons Unit, Homicide Cold Case Investigators, Texas Rangers and federal officers.

Roberts said she plans to start putting up fliers to find Larry this week.
