Lightning sparks several house fires in Williamson County

- A storm cell swept through the Austin area Monday afternoon bringing lots of lightning with it that sparked several fires in the Williamson County area.

In fact, authorities said at one point they had firefighters from seven different departments battling four house fires at the same time in the county.

No injuries were reported at any of the homes, but each of the structures did suffer significant damage according to fire officials.

In Cedar Park, lightning struck the roof of a home on Paden Circle quickly igniting the attic area.

The Cedar Park Fire Department said two people were in the home when the fire started around 3:20 p.m., but they both made it out safely.

It only took firefighters about 20 minutes to put out the flames; however, there was extensive damage to the structure.

Cedar Park authorities said the quick action of neighbors who called 911 kept the flames from spreading any further.
“Thankfully, no one was at home at the time of the fire. We're very grateful there were no injuries. Obviously, the family is very upset about their home, they are displaced, but we're told they have insurance and that they will be taken care of and we're also trying to connect them to any additional resources that may try to help them,” said Jennie Huerta, spokesperson for the City of Cedar Park.
Firefighters said lightning fires are typically more difficult to fight because the flames spread very quickly through the roof.
