Elementary school hoping to rebuild burned playground

Most of us can recall recess being the most fun part of the day. Now for some students at Winn Elementary, that has changed as of August 1, just after 9:30 p.m.

“They found a playscape on fire with some extension into some trees,” said AFD Division Chief Palmer Buck.

AFD thinks this was arson. Meaning someone intentionally set it on fire.

“It certainly is tragic when it involves school or playground equipment. We're hoping the community will ban together to help them replace it,” said Buck.

As of right now, the spot where the playscape was, sits bare next to another playscape meant for older children. In lieu of the situation, Winn  started a fundraising campaign on Edbacker.com

Their goal is to raise $20,000 to rebuild the playscape, but also provide alternative games for the children who used that playscape.

“Don't mess with the kids. Let them go to school and play. That's their only safe haven is to get out of the house and go to school,” said a neighbor.

As of Thursday evening, the campaign has raised nearly $2,000 but they say every cent can make a difference. The money could bring back a piece of joy for these young kids.

There was another playscape burned back in April at Oak Springs Elementary.
There is no indication if this is the same person or not.
