Army veteran killed in crash with suspected drunk driver on Veterans Day

The man killed in a wrong way crash on I-35 in Round Rock Wednesday was an Army veteran who served two deployments in Afghanistan.

As we learn more about his service to our country police have released new details about the intoxication level of the man who hit him.

25-year-old Domonick Turner's Facebook profile picture shows him standing by a motorcycle.

His wife Liz tells FOX 7 that he loved motorcycles. He was riding one on I-35 early Wednesday morning.

"He was headed to the airport for a job interview out of state," said Round Rock Police Sgt. Justin Davis.

As Turner traveled through Round Rock, officers say 31-year-old John McClintock, who was going northbound in the southbound lanes, struck and killed him.

Police estimate McClintock got onto I-35 some 14 miles south in Austin.

Newly released court documents show McClintock told officers he was trying to get home to San Marcos, but had taken a wrong turn. He admitted to drinking five beers and taking three shots of whiskey prior to getting behind the wheel.

When asked to rate his intoxication level, McClintock said on a scale of 0 to 10, he was a seven. He also said he threw up on himself before the crash. He was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter.

"It's a devastating and catastrophic event every time someone dies," said Sgt. Davis.

But investigators would learn, this case was all the more heart-breaking as turner was a veteran.

"We have many veterans who work in our department and it hits home and veterans service this country and to die on Veterans Day is a tragic, tragic event," said Davis.

Turner's wife says he served six years in the army as a helicopter mechanic. He did two tours in Afghanistan. He then served one year in the National Guard. He recently went back for a civilian job, but returned in October because he missed his wife.

Liz Turner sent the following letter to FOX 7:
"He was the most amazing person I know. He had many friends and was so easy to make friends that he and a stranger could have a conversation for hours. He spent 6 years in the Army and spent two tours in Afghanistan. One he was out, he was in the National Guard part time and attended Appalachian State University in hopes to become a park ranger. He had been riding motorcycles since he could walk and even thought me how to ride when we started dating. Everyone knows that he lived life on two wheels. We planned to live a long life together, to travel as much as the world we could see, and to have many children. We loved each other so passionately and everyone who knew us would say the same. I miss him more than anything and would give anything to get him back."
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission has gotten involved. They will investigate any bars McClintock visited prior to the crash. That includes determining if McClintock was overserved, or if the establishments in any way contributed to the incident. Punishment will range from a fine up to suspension of liquor license
