15 counties eligible for federal assistance following severe weather

Dozens of residents in Central Texas are now eligible for federal assistance following the devastating floods and severe weather that occurred Halloween weekend.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials announced Wednesday that residents in 15 Central Texas counties affected by severe weather can now register with FEMA— homes and businesses harmed or devastated can qualify.

Travis County officials said assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs and for other serious disaster-related needs, such as medical and dental expenses or funeral costs. Local officials also remind residents that low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) may also be available to cover losses not fully compensated by insurance or other recoveries, and they do not duplicate benefits of other agencies or organizations.

Currently 15 counties are eligible for federal funding. Individuals in the following affected counties can register for federal assistance: Bastrop, Brazoria, Caldwell, Comal, Galveston, Guadalupe, Hardin, Harris, Hays, Hidalgo, Liberty, Navarro, Travis, Willacy, and Wilson.

Residents can register with FEMA by calling 1-800-621-3362 or online at disasterassistance.gov.
