Sex offender who fled Austin halfway house captured in New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico— The Albuquerque Police Department took into custody a “sexually violent predator” on Friday who cut off his GPS tracker and fled an Austin halfway house.

Fernando Thompson, 57, was captured following a traffic stop in Albuquerque. On Nov. 24, Thompson violated requirements for a civil commitment program by knowingly and intentionally cutting off his ankle monitor and escaping from Burkes Supervised Living Center located in Austin, DPS officials said.

Thompson was convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a child and sexual assault in the early 80s. He received a 30-year sentence and 20-year sentence for the two sex crimes to be served concurrently.
