FOX 7 VIDEO VAULT: 'Return of the Jedi' opens in Austin in 1983

Never underestimate the power of Star Wars.  The Force Awakens, opening this week, will be huge to say the least.

"Yeah if there were a Super Bowl of movie theaters, this is it.  I mean this is the biggest movie of all time," said Greg Johnson with Flix Brewhouse in Round Rock.

Back in 1983, KTBC was there for the opening day of the last...ahem...good Star Wars movie: Return of the Jedi.

Lines wrapped around the Highland Mall Theater.  You can see the footage on FOX 7's "Video Vault" YouTube Page.

Those lines in our old footage are not all that common anymore because many places -- like the Round Rock-based "Flix Brewhouse," ticket holders have assigned seats you can buy way ahead of time.  Flix Brewhouse movie-goers have taken advantage of that at their 3 locations across the country.

"We've sold over 20,000 tickets already to this movie and it hasn't even opened yet," Johnson said.

Whenever you walk into the Flix Brewhouse in Round Rock or in any of their locations nationwide, you'll see awesome Star Wars banners hanging in the lobby done by a local artist named Ken Salinas.

Salinas was one of those people standing in line for the original films.

Nowadays he's a mechanic by trade and just in the last few years he's started painting with watercolor.

"I'm such a huge fan that I started doing these Star Wars pictures and little by little this collection started getting bigger and bigger," Salinas said.

Now he travels the country selling his prints at comic conventions.  But seeing his artwork in the same theater where he'll be seeing The Force Awakens...is pretty cool.

"It blows my mind to see my stuff standing there 10 foot tall and it's been really surreal really to be able to do this," he said.
